SMS: Peanut Butter Truffle Pie

SMS: Peanut Butter Truffle Pie

This week's SMS was selected by Donna of L'Amour de Tarte: chocolate pie crust. We could fill the pie with anything we wanted so long as it wasn't a recipe from the book. I knew immediately what I would do. I'd seen a peanut butter truffle tart on Sarah's blog, Blue Ridge Baker, in December and bookmarked it so it was the perfect time to give it a shot.

SMS: Peanut Butter Truffle Pie

I've never made a chocolate pie crust, but this one was remarkably similar to a regular pie crust with the addition of cocoa powder. The recipe gives instructions for making the crust by hand, but I did it in my food processor to make life easier. It was a bit tricky to roll out out - mine kept cracking, but I did get it into the pie pan and set it out on my back deck to chill (it's REALLY cold out today and our fridge is overflowing). Then, disaster almost struck. I'd been keeping an eye on the deck and when I looked out, here's what I saw:

SMS Chocolate Pie Crust
"Ooooh, chocolate pie crust - just what I was hoping for this morning!"

I shooed him away before he sampled the crust and then, because I felt bad, I put some crackers outside for him to nibble on instead. I brought the crust inside and set out to blind bake it. I pressed a piece of buttered aluminum foil against the crust, lined it with pie weights and baked it in a preheated 425 F oven for 20 minutes, then removed the pie weights and aluminum foil and baked for another 5-10 minutes.

After the crust cooled completely I got to work on the filling. The bottom of the crust is spread with a layer of peanut butter, which has been thinned with heavy cream. On top of the peanut butter is a basic ganache made with semisweet chocolate. It all comes together very quickly and easily and then you pop it into the fridge for at least an hour to allow the ganache to set.

As for the verdict? The pie crust was disappointing. It was quite bland and definitely not worth the effort it took to roll it out and get it in the pie plate. The filling was good, but very, very rich! I only had one small bite and that was plenty for me. Shane will likely be a big fan but he's out for a long run in this frigid weather so he hasn't tried it yet. Thanks to Donna for hosting this week! You can find the recipe for the crust on her site and the recipe for the peanut butter truffle filling on Sarah's site.

The pie looks amazing! I guess all of us had our trouble with the pie crust!

That little squirel wanted a nibble! Your filling looks so yummy! I love PB pie. I hear you on the crust..it was nasty. My entire family left in behind on the plate. I like the oreo crust much better for my turtle pie!

It certainly looks good. Most people are disappointed in the crust so it may not be the best one around.

With that filling, hopefully it overpowered the bland crust with its wonderful flavor.

You might not like the pie crust but it sure looked like your little critter pal thought it looked good:) Thanks for the review. I am not a happy camper when I spend time on a recipe that falls short of my expectations. Not to worry because in our house every morsel of food is eaten no matter what, especially a PB recipe:) I see you have the cute little WS gingerbread men plates which are so cute!

You even crimped the crust?!?!?!? I didnt even bother... the dough was so hard to work with. Your filling sounds amazing!

you did such a beautiful job making pretty edges on your crust? i tried to do that but gave up quickly and just trimmed it all off. whats your technique?? :) Sorry you didn't love it!!! I agree - it was a bit on the bland side. Though the super-sweetness of my pie made up for it.

Ha ha! I love the squirrel shot - he almost made it!

You're the second person to remark that the pie crust was bland - not a good thing at all. I'll be sure to skip that one in the book.

I wonder if he would have thought the crust bland as well. Except, he never got a chance! It looked perfectly crimped - A+ in my book! I'm sure the filing more than made up for it!

The peanut butter chocolate filling sounds amazing, but I don't think I'd be able to handle too much of it either. Your pictures are great, especially the one with the squirrel. I actually made the dough, but never got around to making a pie this weekend.

I have to watch out for furry friends when ever I put someone on the deck to cool! Nice to see someone else has the same troubles. :) Pie looks great. Sorry to hear the crust wasn't all that.

Ooh... I wish I hadn't seen this. Not because it doesn't look wonderful... but because it looks absolutely wonderful! It's not helping my "sweets in moderation" efforts, at all. I could eat the whole pie!

I still love that squirrel picture. =) Sorry to hear that the crust wasn't that good. The filling sounds fantastic.
