With all of the baking I do, I am VERY rarely tempted by the sweet treats available at the grocery store. Whether it's prepackaged crackers and cookies, or the pastries sitting in plastic containers in the bakery section, I know a homemade version is pretty much always going to be better, even if it requires some extra effort on my part. But those giant soft sugar cookies with the too sweet frosting? They're my kryptonite. I bought them all the time when I was in law school and then mindlessly snacked on way too many while I crammed for exams. Those cookies haven't made it into my grocery cart in quite some time (years probably) but they always catch my eye and I consider it for just a moment. Needless to say, I was totally stoked when this homemade version started showing up on different blogs in my Google Reader.

Do you want to know how much I loved these cookies? They were such a big hit that as soon as I tried the first one I knew I wasn't sharing them with anyone. If you stop by this site regularly you know that I usually mention offering the things I bake to friends/family/neighbors/etc. Not these cookies though; Shane wasn't interested in trying them either, so the whole batch was for me (well, technically a half batch since I halved the recipe). They're soft and cakey in texture, with a buttery, sweet flavor - pretty much exactly as I remember the store-bought ones, only 100 times better! Mine have now lasted for 5 days, and while the frosting looks a little worse for the wear, the cookies taste as good as they did on day one. Speaking of the frosting, I let mine get too thin and was then too impatient to fix it so it sort of ran down the sides rather than sitting neatly on the top, as I'd have liked. No worries, I'll gladly make this recipe over and over again until I get it right :)
Soft Frosted Sugar Cookies
from Annie's Eats (who adapted from Hostess with the Mostess)
Cookies
4 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
4 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
3/4 teaspoons salt
1 1/2 cups (3 sticks) unsalted butter, at room temperature
1 1/2 cups sugar
3 large eggs, at room temperature
5 teaspoons vanilla extract
Frosting
5 cups confectioners’ sugar, sifted
1/3 cup (5 1/3 tablespoons) unsalted butter, melted
1 tablespoon vanilla extract
7-8 tablespoons milk (plus more, as needed)
food coloring (optional)
sprinkles (optional)
To make the cookies: Whisk the flour, baking powder and salt together in a medium bowl. In the bowl of a stand mixer fitted with the paddle attachment, cream the butter and sugar on medium speed until light and fluffy, about 3 minutes. Add the eggs, one at a time, beating well after each addition. Mix in the vanilla extract. With the mixer on low, add the flour mixture a little at a time, beating just until combined. Cover the bowl with plastic wrap and refrigerate the dough for 1 hour.
Meanwhile, preheat oven to 350 F. Line two baking sheets with parchment paper.
Measure about 1/4 cup of dough for each cookie (I used a scale - it was about 55-60g per cookie). Roll the dough into balls then place on the prepared cookie sheets and press to flatten just slightly (seriously, just a little - they'll spread as they bake), spacing them at least 2 inches apart (I baked 6 per sheet). Bake for 12-13 minutes, or until the edges of the cookies are just set. Don't overbake or they won't have the soft texture you want. Transfer the baking sheets to wire racks and let the cookies cool on the sheets for about 5 minutes, then transfer them to the racks to cool completely.
To make the frosting: Combine the confectioners' sugar, butter, vanilla and milk in a large bowl, and whisk to combine. If necessary, you can add more milk, 1 teaspoon at a time, until you have the consistency you want. Add food coloring, if desired, and whisk to combine. Frost the cooled cookies with an offset spatula. Top with sprinkles if desired and set aside to let the frosting set. Store in an airtight container.
Makes about 2 dozen cookies

Those are my favorite cookies! I HAVE to make these! Mmm
OH MY GOODNESS!!! THese are the only things ever that I buy from the bakery!!! Yours look amazing:)
Oh, these remind me so much of home. These are typical "kid" cookies. Sure to make any kiddie, and young at heart adult, smile.
These look and sound amazing!
I'm not at all a sugar cookie fan, but I DO like those frosted ones at the grocery store! Yours look so cute - they would be great to take to a gathering.
I know the exact soft sugar cookie you are talking about! I indulge in them every once in a while, but I usually get them for my sister who has them two, sometimes 3, a day. She hasn't requested them lately, but these would be a good expirament to bake :P Yum!
I love these cookies, too! My roommates and I once took an open house tour twice in a row because they served these cookies at the end of it. I played around with recipes that I liked after that until I found a soft one that was similar. Looks like I'm going to have to try this one, too, to compare. Darn. :)
Yes! I cannot resist these cookies either! I never buy them myself but whenever I am at someone's house or a pot-luck they always seem to appear and I eat at least two.
these look so festive!! if you have a fourth of july post, you should link these to it. :)
i remember the ones at the store, the frosting was very chalky and artificial to me so i never liked them but my sissy was gaga over them. So i'm thinking i'll have to make these, if not just for her! :)
You already know I love these! They're a weakness of mine, too. I made them once at home and the kids keep asking for them. I've got to try you recipe!
So cute! I should make these for Hubby. I think this is one of the few sweet treats he might actually like. And I'm impressed at how long they last.
These look just like bakery cookies, but BETTER! My family would go nuts for these~
Love these cookies too, but I haven't had the grocery store version either. I am making these soon!
Looks so simple yet seems good for my kids on our bonding moments
My kids are like that. I bake all of the time, but they tease like crazy when they see those sprinkle covered sugar cookies in the stores. I will definitely have to make these for my gang.
haha, they must be good if you're not going to share them!!! :)
the way you described those cookies have got me sold! I absolutely love these type of cookies but haven't gotten them in a while now, because of my diet. I think this recipe is a good reason to detract from that diet ;p
I know quite a few people who really love this sort of cookie, so I'm bookmarking this recipe right now. =) And I bet B&G would love them, especially if they get to help frost & decorate them.
Tracey, did you store your cookies in a tupperware container? Did you store them at room temp or in the fridge?
@Gloria - I had them in a single layer in a big gallon size ziploc bag at room temperature. It was pretty humid here, which is probably why the frosting didn't look great on mine after a few days, but the cookies themselves held up well.
Thanks Tracey! I made them today to take on girls trip I'm going on tomorrow with 2 of my girlfriends. They love these kind of cookies so hopefully they will hold up to the road trip!
I'm so happy to see this recipe! No one can resist these in the grocery store--I'm glad to have a homemade version!
Quick question: when you said you halved the recipe...it has 3 eggs, so did you include the egg yolk or egg white + 1 egg?
@Christina - When I halve recipes using an odd number of eggs, I usually break out my scale. I crack the egg into a bowl and use a fork to break up the yolk and beat it. My rule of thumb is 50 g (without the shell) for a large egg so once I beat the egg, I just measure 25 g and add that to the recipe. If you don't have a scale you could measure by volume or even estimate - I did both before I had my scale :)
The grocery store packages may be very eye appealing, but yours are too and I'm betting yours taste a whole lot better!
I've been wanting to make these! They look so good, and I love their store-bought counterparts :)
These look great!! I always see the ones at the store and they are tempting. But I am sure that these are ten times better!
The cookies were a big hit with my girlfriends. Hope to get a post up soon with the results. Thanks again for sharing!
Hey! I was wondering if I could get some help. First of all, I love your blog. I have a bunch of recipes bookmarked. :)
I was really excited to make these, because I just love the storebought ones so much, and yours looked even better. But my dough had a bit of a problem.
I followed the dough recipe exactly. I put it in the fridge for an hour and everything. It says not to push down on the dough too much because the cookies will spread. Well, mine didn't. They just became really huge mounds of cooked cookies on the outside and rawish dough on the inside. I didn't know what to do besides push them down in the other batches. But then they came out too crunchy (which isn't a bad thing but not what I wanted). Do you think you could help me?
Thanks for any help!
@Sam Noodles Thode - I'm sorry you had troubles with the dough. It's hard for me to guess what went wrong without being there. It sounds like the first batch wasn't pushed down quite enough, and the second batch was overbaked. You really want to take them out when the edges are just set - you might think the centers look too soft, but they'll continue cooking even after they're removed from the oven. I'd suggest only using the time in the recipe as a guide. Keep a close eye on them and once the edges are set, pull them. Hope that helps!
These were SOOO good. Thanks for sharing!
I love the frosted sugar cookies. I can't wait to make these:)
